Above Photo: A Sea Cow in Mobile. No, I'm not talking about the fat Mayor, rather the fat marine mammal called a Manatee. Here is one chowing down on submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). A baby manatee was recently found dead. What might kill a baby manatee besides toxic pollution? Anything that might trap one underwater preventing it from coming up for air, like netting. Here in Mobile, there are no watershed monitors to check for netting hazards so they can be removed. Here in Mobile, the City won't even remove the public trash from their public waterways. The founding fathers of this country must be saddened to see America turning into one big garbage dump. Happy Independence Day. The Manatee Sighting Network (MSN) website posted the above picture of a live manatee and said they responded to a report of a dead baby manatee in Dog River watershed on June 19, 2013. According to MSN, this is the first documented warm season manatee mortality in Alabama waters. Why am I not surprised it happened in the Dog River watershed? Especially near Moore Creek and McCullough Bayou, both of which are recipients of the City of Mobile's storm water garbage and raw sewage pollution. Once the public's trash and poop hit the water, the City of Mobile ignores it. That can't be good for large marine mammals that live in Dog River during their yearly migration.
Local Channel 15 TV did a news report on the new Litter Trap recently installed in upper Eslava Creek because it rained today (Dec 10th). Litter Trap Gets First Real Test There can be no test of the litter trap without heavy rain.
Despite the low amount of rain, the Channel 15 video news report did show some muddy water and trash coming out of a drainage pipe a few feet downstream from where the City of Mobile installed the new litter trap way upstream in Eslava Creek. A few feet away and trash is already flowing down to Dog River? That is trash that goes right by the litter trap and continues flowing on downstream. What were the City engineers thinking when they decided to place the trap upstream of all the trash generating ditches? I think the City wants litter booms to fail so they don't have to deal with putting in any more or maintaining them. Channel 15 reporter John Dzenitis is heard saying on the video, "The boom seems solid by the way they kept the silt out." Huh? The litter boom is not designed to keep silt out. John, you do not have a clue what you are talking about. The silt you showed on video was coming out of a pipe downstream of the litter trap so how did the boom keep the silt out? The litter trap has nothing to do with containment of muddy water (silt). Muddy water is another pollution problem the City of Mobile does a awful job of preventing. Glad you documented a muddy water violation. Did you report it to ADEM? The video shows the rim of the floating boom was under water by the trap meaning had much trash been flushed to the trap it would have easily floated right across the litter trap? Did TV 15 point out this serious flaw in the news report? No. Unlike Kim, I am not optimistic about the City of Mobile cleaning up area waterways. As long as the City of Mobile employs ZERO people to remove the garbage from local waterways, garbage along Mobile area shorelines and filling up area creekbeds will always be a problem. Why is it news reporters never ask City officials why they have zero people cleaning local waterways when there is so much trash in them? John? Here are some photos from Moore Creek taken yesterday showing that the City of Mobile does not bother to keep the shoreline along their own properties clean. Someone in the City of Mobile should be fired for allowing violations of the Clean Water Act to continue. |
